A fledgling discount carrier based in Vancouver, Canada Jetlines Ltd., has ambitious plans for Hamilton.
The company wants to get 16 planes up in the air and wants to charge you less to ride them.
Their route map shows a network of non-stop flights using Vancouver, Winnipeg and Hamilton as hubs, while avoiding Calgary and Toronto.
President and director of Canada Jetlines David Solloway says John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport fits their plan.
Solloway adds, “Well I think Hamilton is an excellent example of an airport that both under-served and un-served at the same time as many cities fare. Yet Hamilton has grown into a large city with sophisticated travellers and we believe they want to travel from Hamilton and not to drive to Pearson airport.”
John C. Munro’s board says the negotiations with Canada Jetlines are sensitive at this time.
But in a statement director of marketing and communications Lauren Yaksich says, “At the end of the day we feel the airport’s value proposition is well suited to the low cost carrier model and would welcome Canada Jetlines or any other low cost carrier.”
Canada Jetlines is fundraising agressively and plans to start small with two planes in the air and one back-up.
The airline expects to have roughly 1,000 employees and contractors in three years.
