A section of Hamilton’s busy James Street North was closed for several hours Thursday due to an underground fire.

Hamilton police say the fire came out of a manhole near Rebecca Street, with the call coming in around 11:30 a.m.

It was determined that a nearby transformer was arcing, meaning there was an unintentional electrical discharge.

Alectra Utilities say it was due to the underground transformer being faulty.

Crews fixed the problem and the road reopened by 1:30 p.m.
