Ontario court fines Hamilton $600K over 26-year sewage leak

The City of Hamilton has been fined $600,000 for a sewage leak that went undetected for nearly 30 years.

A provincial court issued the fine of $600,000 and a 25 per cent victim surcharge.

Hamilton has also been ordered to pay the Bay Area Restoration Council $80,000 to improve water quality in the Hamilton Harbour and surrounding watershed.

The leak, which lasted 26 years, dumped up to 337 million litres of waste into the harbour.

Hamilton city officials said in a statement yesterday, that it regrets the impact the leak had on the community.
