St. Joe’s opens reactivation care centre in Dundas to fill restorative care gaps

St. Joseph’s Reactivation Care Centre (RCC) in Dundas opened on Monday, providing up to 57 additional beds for patients needing restorative care before returning home.

This purpose-built space is for individuals who no longer require acute hospital care, but will continue to benefit from restorative care to support their recovery and transition to home or a community-based environment.

Three floors in St. Joseph’s Villa Dundas is supported by an over $16 million investment from the Ontario government.

The additional beds will help ease pressures on hospitals and reduce wait times for patients.

“The new centre will ensure patients can receive the restorative care they need and get back to their families and communities sooner,” said Sylvia Jones, Ontario’s deputy premier and minister of health.

Officials from St. Joseph’s RCC say patients recovering from surgery, a stroke or a complicated medical condition that no longer requires acute hospital care need a clear path to continue their care, which the RCC is providing.

The RCC provides patients with a dynamic team of healthcare workers who specialize in rehabilitative care and will address each individual’s needs to get them back into the community or their next care setting.

“The RCC demonstrates the strength of St. Joseph’s Health System in providing efficient healthcare for our community,” said Dr. Mike Heenan, president and CEO of St. Joseph’s Health System.

“Cooperation among our member organizations through programs like the RCC leverages existing resources and allows our healthcare workers to fulfill the mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph to care for patients across the lifespan, when and where they need it.”

The RCC focuses on reactivation care which includes patients regaining strength and independence through social and cognitive programming, care coordination and detailed planning for eventual transition out of the RCC.

The RCC is open to adults of any age although many patients will be older adults.
