Hamilton police have charged a 12-year-old boy and a 48-year-old woman after an assault at a restaurant inside Centre Mall that left a man with life-altering injuries.

On Sunday at around 1:45 p.m., officers were called to a restaurant located at 1223 Barton St. E. after reports of an assault involving two young boys and a 59-year-old man.

Investigators say the incident began when the two boys approached young Air Cadets from a local squadron who were selling Remembrance Day poppies in front of the restaurant and blew a loud air horn directly into their ears.

Detectives say a 59-year-old man supervising the cadets followed the young boys into the restaurant to confront them about their actions.

Police say a struggle ensued and an adult woman who was not initially involved in the altercation jumped in to assist the youths. She then assaulted the man, causing him to fall to the ground.

Officers say one of the young boys then struck the man several times before leaving the restaurant. The woman also left the scene before police arrived.
