Toronto police Chief Myron Demkiw says officers did not arrest a suspect in the violent Bridle Path home invasion after he showed up in a hospital with a gunshot wound because not all evidence was available to them yet.

Demkiw says police had no information at the time to suggest any of the attackers were shot during the home invasion that happened early on Thursday.

He says when one of the suspects went to a hospital “a very short time later,” police responded in the usual way they handle reports of people who seek medical care after being shot.

Demkiw says officers were following evidence in the case as fast as they could under the circumstances.

Police said in a social media post over the weekend that investigators “immediately” recognized the potential connection between the home invasion and the person who showed up at the hospital, but suspicion alone was not enough for them to make an arrest.

They have identified the suspect as 23-year-old Daijohn Richards, and say he was accidentally shot during the home invasion by one of the other two suspects.

Richards was discharged from the hospital early Thursday morning and is wanted on a Canada-wide arrest warrant.

Demkiw said Monday that police will continue to follow evidence as it becomes available, and “the investigators involved in this investigation are some of the best in the business.”

Police say all three suspects in the case are considered armed and dangerous.
