Trudeau announces new military, economy aid during Ukraine PM’s visit

During the Ukraine prime minister’s visit on Tuesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a span of military and economic measures to further support Ukraine in its war with Russia.

That includes the supply of assault rifles, machine-guns and ammunition as well as an update to the Canada-Ukraine free trade deal.

The two nations signed a bilateral Youth Mobility Agreement, which will benefit the youth to work and travel in both countries.

Trudeau also announced new sanctions targeting 14 Russian individuals and 34 entities involved in Russia’s war in Ukraine, including several security targets linked to the Wagner Group and Russia’s aviation sector.

Trudeau says Canada is imposing new sanctions on Russian and Belarusian organizations and authorities in retaliation for the ongoing invasion.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal visited to thank Canada for supporting his country.

Since the Russian invasion in February 2022, Canada has provided billions of dollars in military aid to Ukraine, which includes a $2.4-billion loan announced in this year’s federal budget, in addition to battle tanks, ammunition and armoured vehicles.

The prime ministers were also joined by Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly and the National Defence Minister Anita Anand.
