Tariff struggle: Duty-free stores ask Ottawa for financial help

With fewer travellers crossing the U.S.-Canada border in the wake of President Donald Trump’s tariffs, Canadian duty free stores are turning to Ottawa for financial support.

According to the Frontier Duty Free Association, its members have seen their revenue decline by up to 80 per cent due to the U.S. trade war.

The Association is now asking the federal government for immediate cash support.

It also wants the national government to align export status and excise tax policies with American dutyfree rules, saying it would make the stores more competitive with their U.S. counterparts.
