Former cabinet minister and longtime Liberal MP Chrystia Freeland has announced she will resign as a member of Parliament on Friday.

On Monday, Freeland accepted a role as an economic development advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Later that same day, she announced her immediate departure from her role as Prime Minister Mark Carney’s special representative on Ukraine’s reconstruction.

Freeland has been an MP since 2013 and previously served as finance minister and deputy prime minister under Justin Trudeau. Last year, she ran for the Liberal Party leadership but lost to Carney.

It was announced in November 2025 that Freeland would become the CEO of the Rhodes Trust, a global educational charity in Oxford, England – she is set to assume the role on July 1.
