(Updated 8:47pm) A Peterborough police officer has been shot and another person is dead following a shooting in Lindsay Wednesday.

The officer is identified as Constable Keith Calderwood, a member of the emergency response team for Peterborough Lakefield Police, and a father of three.
He was with Kawartha Lakes Police, executing a search warrant in a Lindsay drug house.
Calderwood was shot twice – in the arm and leg – and a male suspect was killed.

A reporter on scene for Kawartha Lakes This Week said the neighbourhood was shocked to hear semi-automatic gunfire break out.

Lois Tuffin told CHCH News “it was like semi-automatic gun fire. So many shots, gunfire started right away. The person inside the house started shooting at police and obviously those shots were returned.”

While the constable was transferred by air ambulance to St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, an emergency convoy raced along highway 401 to bring the officer’s family members to his side.

Calderwood is in stable condition.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit has assigned six investigators, and four forensic investigators to determine what happened during the raid. Five people are in custody.
