A team from St. Catharines and one from Stoney Creek are off to a robotics world championship at the end of the month.

Team 2056 – OP Robotics from Orchard Park Secondary School took the top spot at the FIRST Robotics Ontario Provincial Championship in Niagara Falls this weekend.

Following them from Governor Simcoe Secondary School, the Simbiotics, took second after they set a world record with a 868 point first round, while working with two other teams in the finals.

The competition involves robots shooting balls into a central hub, with points for scoring and technical merit. Around 100 robotics teams from across the province were in attendance.

It was the first robotics competition which was held at the Niagara Falls Convention Centre, which allowed students interested in all fields of science to develop essential skills.

The winning robot from Governor Simcoe Secondary School, named “Simbot Tim,” was built from scratch in just a few months.

Both teams will compete in the world championships in Houston, Texas from April 29 to May 2.
