A flower shop in Hamilton is spreading a little kindness one rose at a time on Wednesday in honour of Good Neighbour Day.

Starting at 7 a.m. and while supplies last, Jean’s Flower Shop, located at 509 Upper Wellington St. is giving away free roses.

“Nurses for instance come in and hand them out to co-workers at the hospital. We have parents come in, they take them to caregivers at a nursing home,” says Debbie Thomson, business owner at Jean’s Flower Shop.

“We have people that come in that say, ‘We just got one off the street. Someone just handed us a rose. Thank you so much.’ So it really puts a smile on everybody’s face.”

Thomson says people call weeks in advance and are always happy when they come in. She says this initiative puts both a smile on the workers’ and customers’ faces.

Roses are limited to one dozen per family while supplies last. Families will keep one rose for themselves and spread joy within the community with the 11 remaining flowers.

The flower shop will also be accepting non-perishable food item donations for the Neighbour to Neighbour Centre, a local non-profit fighting poverty through community services.
