Police say they discovered a series of man-made holes and tunnels in Gage Park during a proactive encampment check.

Officers say during a proactive encampment check they discovered a large hole approximately six feet in depth dug into the ground in the park.

They say it connected to a series of tunnels carved out in the surrounding soil to allow for extension cords and electrical wiring to connect to multiple tents in the area.

Investigators say a generator that was powering the entire setup was hidden in a hole dug into another hole, and covered up.

A final power cord was found to be running from the generator to a City of Hamilton light pole.

Officers say an investigation determined one man was responsible for the mischief on the property.

Police found and arrested the man, who was charged with mischief over $5,000 and charges involving possessing drugs for the purposes of trafficking.

The department says the remaining tents in the area were relocated due to safety concerns. The holes will be fenced off until the city makes the necessary repairs.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
