Hamilton pet-sitter pleads not guilty as Kippen Cares trial begins

The trial for a Hamilton pet-sitter facing allegations of animal abuse began on Monday after dogs died while in the care of this business.

Last November, Jessica Kippen of Kippen Cares was charged with 96 violations under the Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act in relation to the death of five dogs and the distress of two dozen others.

The events had prompted an outcry from animal activists in the community at the time.

Cassandra Almeida said it felt like a nightmare come true knowing that her six-year-old dog Sammy died while at Kippen Cares.

Cartelo, a pocket bully puppy died there the same week and Kippen stored the body in a freezer.

Advocates are calling on police to lay criminal charges in this case as they say several pet owners have reported this business in the past.

Hamilton’s zoning and committee of adjustment confirmed to CHCH News that Kippen Cares is not permitted to operate a kennel.

Monday’s trial heard from witnesses and their recounts and their dogs’ interactions with Kippen.

Kippen pleaded not guilty to all charges.
