Grand Erie Public Health (GEPH) confirmed Wednesday that mosquitoes collected last week from a Simcoe neighbourhood tested positive for West Nile virus.

The mosquitoes were collected as part of a surveillance program and is the first lab confirmed evidence of the virus in the GEPH region this year.

Mosquitoes can transmit the virus to humans after becoming infected by feeding on the blood of birds carrying the virus.

The health department says residents should take steps to protect themselves and their families from mosquitoes, by covering up bare skin with light-coloured clothing and to avoid being outdoors from the early evening to the morning — when mosquitoes are the most active.

They also suggest residents reduce mosquito breeding sites around the home by removing water-filled containers, and to change any water in bird baths at least once a week.

Using insect repellent containing DEET or Icaridin, removing standing water on properties regularly — including bird baths, old tires, pails, toys and wheelbarrows for example — and to ensure all windows and doors to homes have screens in good condition.

If symptoms develop, they typically appear two to 14 days after an infected mosquito bite.

Anyone with questions surrounding West Nile virus or wants to report standing water can call the GEPH at 519-753-4937, ext. 6444; 905-798-9060, ext. 3477; or at 519-900-9600.
