Ontario opens expanded emergency department at Brantford General Hospital

Ontario has opened a new and expanded emergency department at Brantford General Hospital.

“The new and expanded emergency department at Brantford General Hospital will reduce wait times, increase capacity and deliver faster, high-quality emergency care for patients and families for years to come,” said Sylvia Jones, Ontario’s deputy premier and minister of health.

Supported by a provincial investment of $28 million, the new facility is over 7,000 square feet larger than the hospital’s previous emergency department.

This project is part of the government’s plan to protect Ontario’s health-care system by investing about $64 billion in health infrastructure, in support of over 50 major hospital projects across the province.

The new state-of-the-art emergency department includes new and expanded treatment rooms to support faster patient assessments, a dedicated extended-stay area and an improved walk-in arrival area.

It also includes additional mental health safe rooms, an expanded observation area, an ambulance arrival and off-loading zone, as well as a new Indigenous Family Space adjacent to the emergency department.

Tuesday’s milestone builds on the nearly $16 million the government invested to support critical upgrades and repairs at Brantford General Hospital.

The province is also investing over $15 million to support the planning and construction of a new Brant Community Healthcare System hospital.

The government says this will expand capacity, improve services and reduce wait times, ensuring the hospital can continue to meet the needs of the region for years to come.
