Remembering Lincoln Alexander

Lieutenant-Governor David Onley has announced on Twitter that Lincoln Alexander has died.

The 24th Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario served in the Royal Canadian Air Force, was Canada’s first black MP, and was a recipient of the Order of Ontario.

He was elected to the House of Commons as the Progressive Conservative member for Hamilton West in 1968, and the Lincoln Alexander Parkway was named after him.

Alexander was a McMaster University grad, and was also the longest-serving chancellor of the University of Guelph.

He underwent surgery earlier this year.

He leaves behind his wife Marni, his son Keith, and granddaughters Erika and Marissa. Lincoln Alexander was 90 years old.
