Nightly fireworks display returning to Niagara Falls this summer

First Published:

The nightly fireworks display in Niagara Falls is set to make a comeback this summer.

Niagara Falls Tourism says its popular nightly tourist attraction is set to return later this month after it had to be cancelled over air quality concerns last year.

The cancellation came as wildfire smoke swept across the country, and Environment Canada issued a special air quality statement that put the Niagara Region in the “high-risk” zone of the Air Quality Health Index.

The yearly tradition is scheduled to return on May 17 and will run for five minutes every night, starting at 10 p.m. The event runs until Oct. 14.

Two occasions will host lengthier displays. The first will be during the July 1 Canada Day celebrations, and the second will commemorate Independence Day in the U.S. on July 4.

The region’s tourism arm says some of the best spots for viewing the display are from either the Niagara Gorge, between the American and Canadian Horseshow Falls, or Queen Victoria Park.

“Fireworks have been thrilling visitors to Niagara Falls for years with breathtaking displays overlooking the world-famous Falls. The nightly shows are yet another reason to spend the night and explore all that Niagara Falls has to offer – day and night,” said Joel Noden, Chair of Niagara Falls Tourism.

Whether or not Ontario will be inundated with wildfire smoke like it was last summer remains unclear.

Currently, there are only five wildfires across the province. The nearest one to Niagara is in Pembroke.

The latest report from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has it sized at five hectares and listed as “under control.”
