Ukraine, climate change top of mind as Trudeau kicks off G20 summit

The G20 summit started today in Rio de Janeiro, with Canada among the world leaders discussing climate change, world hunger, and wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau started his trip with bi-lateral meetings with the leaders of Japan, Mexico, and Italy.

This event marks Trudeau’s 10th G20 summit as the leader of Canada. His goal this year will reportedly be to shore up support for Ukraine, and convince Canada’s defensive allies to grant Ukraine full NATO membership.

Brazil is expected to propose ceasefire talks instead.

The war was also a topic of discussion between Trudeau and U.S. President Joe Biden during a private meeting.

This will be Biden’s final G20 summit, before President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January, and many conversations at this year’s retreat revolve around what international relations will look like during a second Trump term.
