Death toll surpasses 1,000 in Nepal floods, 4,000 remain missing

Over 1,000 people are dead and nearly 4,000 remain missing after a flood swept through Nepal near the Chinese border.

Nepal’s disaster agency says 987 deaths have been confirmed while Chinese authorities have confirmed 16 deaths in Tibet.

The Aug. 26 glacial collapse sent large amounts of rock, ice and meltwater into valleys below, triggering powerful floods downstream.

Scientists studying satellite imagery say the collapse appears to have involved the failure of bedrock beneath a glacier in the Himalayan region.

As landslides and wiped-out roads continue to block access, rescue teams are struggling to reach remote areas after last week’s massive disaster.

Rescue teams in Nepal are racing to reach hundreds of hydropower workers trapped in tunnels.
