The Royal Botanical Gardens annual tree collection returns

The Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) needs a maximum of 2,000 trees to place in critical zones for restoration in its annual tree collection.
The organization is asking community members to pre-register their donation(s) ahead of their drop-off.
People can drop off their Christmas tree between Dec. 28 to Jan. 9. It will be at an un-staffed location near the border of Hamilton and Burlington.
Specific instructions and location will be emailed to registrants.
“Let your tree continue to work for nature even after it’s done its traditional duty,” said RBG in an announcement.

RGB’s annual tree collection began over 10 years ago. Since the launch of the project, over 175,000 trees have been repurposed and placed into the banks of the Chedoke and Grindstone Creeks.
Once the trees are placed, their branches start to collect and retain suspended sediment, which helps form a riverbank.
As the year goes by and more trees are placed, the riverbanks stabilize, which help channel the flow of water during high-water events, said RGB.
The organization thanked all the people that have donated and helped with the project.
