The Brant County Health Unit (BCHU) has received lab confirmation of a case of invasive meningococcal disease on Friday.

BHCHU says the case is currently being hospitalized.

The unit also says they have notified any high-risk contacts, and no secondary cases or spread has been associated with the case.

But as a precaution, residents are asked to lookout for symptoms including sudden fever, drowsiness, irritability, and vomiting – symptoms develop two to 10 days after exposure.

A skin rash that spreads quickly and begins as reddish/purplish spots that don’t disappear when pressed is another symptom of the disease.

Invasive meningococcal is a rare but serious infection that is spread through close contact.

The disease can lead to meningitis, a dangerous infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord, and/or blood infection.

BHCHU says Influenza also increases risk of rare, harmful events associated with invasive meningococcal disease. All those who have not yet received a flu shot are encouraged to receive one.

Anyone with symptoms of invasive meningococcal meningitis, is asked to inform their health care provider immediately before visitation.

The health unit asks to contact BCHU at 519-753-4937 ext. 454 if you have any questions or concerns.
