Rock the Kasbah is a comedy directed by Barry Levinson (The Humbling, Rain Man). The cast features Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, Kate Hudson, Zooey Deschanel, Danny McBride, Scott Caan and Leem Lubany.
A down-on-his-luck rock manager takes his last remaining client on a USO tour of Afghanistan. After finding himself abandoned in Kabul, penniless and without his passport, he discovers a young village girl with an extraordinary voice and manages her through Afghanistan’s version of American Idol, the wildly popular Afghan Star.
“This movie I thought was going to be a little bit more serious than it is,” says Murray, “because it has some serious tones but… this movie is going to be crazily, insanely funny…I had no idea how rife with comic opportunities the whole script was.”
Levinson agrees saying, “It is a comedy but it’s not a slapstick comedy. It needs credibility to it. It needs a sense of reality to it. We have Pashtun actors playing Pashtun. They can speak the language, and those who are speaking, you know, Dari, which is more in Kabul, and you’re trying to create a reality of which you put the Bill Murray character into. So it feels credible.”
