Police investigate fifth shooting in Hamilton in 7 days

A 25-year-old man has received nine separate charges after a shooting in Central Hamilton early Sunday morning.

This is the fifth shooting police have reported in the city in the last seven days.

Hamilton Police responded to the area of Catharine St. North and King William St. shortly after 2:30 a.m. and found a lone male victim suffering from non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers were able to locate a male suspect on scene and he was taken into custody without incident. Police say they are not looking for any additional suspects at this time.

James Thompson, 25, has been charged with the following offences:

  • Aggravated Assault
  • Use of firearm during an offense
  • Discharge firearm with intent
  • Unauthorized possession of firearm
  • Knowledge unauthorized possession of firearm
  • Possess loaded firearm
  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Fail to comply with release order
  • Possession of firearm contrary to order

Even though this is the fifth shooting police have reported in the city in the last seven days, they say it is not believed to be related to any of the other recent incidents.

On Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 4:50 a.m., Hamilton Police responded to a shooting that had just occurred in the area of Balmoral Ave. and Cannon St. East.

The next shooting happened on the following day, Nov. 30, at approximately 9:20 p.m. in the area of Minto Ave. and Bristol St.

The city was quiet for one day before another shooting incident occurred early in the morning on Friday, Dec. 2. Police responded to the area of Campbell Ave. and Grosvenor Ave. North.

And on Saturday, Dec. 3 shortly after 4:00 a.m., officers responded to the area of Main St. East and Catharine St. South when multiple gunshots were heard.

Police say they recognize the impact these events continue to have on the community.

“Public safety remains our priority and officers continue to work diligently to investigate these incidents, and prevent further acts of violence,” Hamilton Police said.
