Halton Region Public Health confirms second case of measles

Halton Region Public Health has confirmed a second case of measles with direct exposure to the first case in Milton.

They are alerting people who may have been exposed at four locations in early September. 

The locations and dates are: 

• Kaha Masjid Khadijah, Milton Banquet Hall: 3090 Steeles Ave. W., Milton on Sept. 4 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
• Qahwah Cafe & Shisha Lounge: 3411 Lakeshore Blvd. W., Etobicoke from Sept. 5 at 11 p.m. to Sept. 6 at 3:30 a.m.
• Costco: 3180 Laird Rd., Mississauga on Sept. 8 from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
• Real Canadian Superstore: 201 Oak Walk Dr., Oakville on Sept. 8 from 7:30 p.m. to 10:15 p.m.

Visitors to these locations during these dates and times are being advised to make sure they have up to date measles vaccinations, with two doses recommended for anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1970.

Infants under one year of age, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems can get very sick with measles and should contact Halton Region Public Health or their health-care professional immediately for further assessment.

Those who think they may have measles must call ahead to the doctor’s office, walk-in clinic or emergency department to allow health care staff to take the necessary precautions to reduce the risk of infection.

Symptoms can appear seven to 21 days after contact with someone who has the measles virus. 

Measles symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, sleepiness, irritability, small, white spots on the inside of the mouth (Koplik Spots) and a red blotchy rash.
