They were tearing down an old building in west Hamilton Saturday, and it wasn’t sitting well with some.
Opened in 1936, the Mount St. Joseph orphanage was later used by McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences. In the fall, a demolition permit was issued to King West Crossings Inc. to develop an office building on the site.
Twice, the planned demolition was postponed to give a potential buyer the chance to work out a renovation plan. But, workers finally arrived this morning to take it down.
Opponents of the demolition were quick to voice their views on Twitter. But, the former orphanage is not on the municipal register and has no legal protection against demolition.
