Mother invents ‘Bold Helmets’ for Sikh kids with top knots

For many children from Sikh families, regular bike or skateboarding helmets don’t fit properly because of the traditional top knot hairstyle. One inventive mother has come up with a bold solution.

Tina Singh’s oldest son Jorah could never wear a normal bike helmet properly because he wears his hair in a top knot under a patka. Singh, a mother of three, took it upon herself to come up with a solution and they’re called Bold Helmets. She has invested well over $100,000 in creating them.

Singh says, “…a lot of Sikh kids have long uncut hair that they keep in a topknot, and because of that the traditional bike helmets I used to buy for my kids didn’t fit.”

There are about 800,000 Sikhs in Canada, roughly 600,000 in the U.S., and close to the same in the U.K. Singh says, “I think a product like this really allows kids to not have limitations in their participation.”
