A $10 billion dollar deficit in year one and balanced books by 2019. That’s the pledge from Liberal leader Justin Trudeau. It came as part of a massive spending plan that was announced in Oakville this morning.
In his bid to take control of the country, Justin Trudeau has made a move that he hopes will swing voters over to the liberals. “The news about the economy isn’t good, and it’s getting worse every day.”
Trudeau announced that a Liberal government would run a $10 billion dollar deficit in the first year, and having a surplus, a bit later. “We are comitted to balancing the budget in 2019.”
It was part of a plan that would see $60 billion in new spending on infrastructure. But a $10 billion deficit is in stark contrast to both his opponents, and a recent poll says that the NDP – not the Liberals are now in the lead. A Forum poll released today has the NDP at 40 percent, the Liberals in second with 30.
“Justin Trudeau taught drama at the highschool level, and what he’s demonstrating in the campaign is that he’s a very good performer.” Political scientist Nelson Wiseman says that this was a gamble, but a gamble that the Liberals had to take. “The Liberals and Justin Trudeau are in deep trouble, and they know it.” He says that Trudeau and the Liberal party have not been able to gain enough ground, and it is obvious. “The way you know you’re behind, and the way the public knows you’re behind is that you start tearing down the other guys.”
