Economy-wide tariffs to hit Canada Tuesday, Trump says

U.S. President Donald Trump says 25 per cent across-the-board tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico will begin Tuesday.
He will also impose a 10 per cent levy on Canadian energy.
“Tomorrow — tariffs 25 per cent on Canada and 25 per cent on Mexico. And that’ll start,” Trump told reporters in the Roosevelt Room in the White House.
The president says there’s no room left for Canada and Mexico to negotiate a way out of the duties.
He says both countries would have to build car plants and “other things” in the United States to get the tariffs removed.
Trump’s executive order to impose economywide tariffs was postponed until Tuesday after Canada and Mexico agreed to implement new security measures at the border.
He initially attributed his tariff threat to his concerns about migration and fentanyl — but Trump previously said the delay would allow time for an “economic” deal.
It is currently unclear what the president would like to see from Canada in exchange for permanently dropping the tariff threat.
This is a developing news story. More to come.
