Driver found guilty in Boris Brott hit-and-run sentenced to almost 8 years

The man found guilty of running down and killing renowned Hamilton conductor Boris Brott has been sentenced Thursday to nearly eight years in prison.
Arsenije Lojovic, 35, will face six years for failing to stop after a crash resulting in a death, three years for dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and one year for breaching probation. But with the time served, the sentence is just under eight years.
Lojovic has also been prohibited from driving in Canada for the rest of his life. Lojovic had pleaded not guilty to all three counts.

Police followed a black Volkswagen Golf that was driving erratically throughout Hamilton on April 5, 2022.
Witnesses have said they saw the car speeding on Upper James Street on Hamilton Mountain, driving on the wrong side of the road and going through red lights. The car then made its way across the city to Burlington Street.
Officers said the man was driving the wrong way on Markland Street and turned onto Park Avenue when he struck and killed Brott, who lived in the neighbourhood.
One officer said they were scared for their life.
Lojovic was arrested a short time later on Hamilton Mountain on Elmwood Street.

The defense argued that Lojovic’s actions when he hit Brott did not meet the criteria for criminal conduct.
A psychiatrist who treated Lojovic in 2018 said he has a history of mental illness, including bipolar disorder and previous issues with sporadic driving such as driving his car into a Home Depot.
However, the judge disagreed, saying that all charges have been proven.
