Canadian Human Rights Tribunal rejects Ottawa’s $40B First Nations child welfare deal

The Canadian Human Rights Tribunal has rejected an historic 40 billion dollar child welfare settlement agreement between the federal government and First Nations.

The tribunal says the agreement doesn’t meet all the requirements of its 2019 compensation order and could exclude some individuals affected by the policies.

In 2019, the tribunal ordered the federal government to compensate children and families after its verdict determined Ottawa discriminated against first nations children for years by not properly funding child-welfare services on reserves.

The Assembly of First Nations’ Manitoba Regional Chief says it’s a devastating setback for 300-thousand families who’d been hoping to see the settlement approved by year’s end.
