Brantford police investigating surge of counterfeit money in circulation

Brantford police are warning businesses and residents of an increase in counterfeit money circulating around the city.

Officers have received 11 reports of fake Canadian bills being used at various businesses since Feb. 1.

Most of the reports involve $100 and $50 bills – many of which have the phrase “Prop Money” in the holographic window strip.

Other signs of counterfeit bills include discolouration or colour that peels off, and repeated serial numbers.

Common fraudulent serial numbers on the $100 bill are:

  • GRJ6710018
  • GRJ6710019
  • GRJ6710020
  • GRJ6710021
  • GRJ6710022

Each bill should have its own unique serial number, so seeing the same number on multiple bills is a red flag.

Anyone who suspects they have received a counterfeit bill or have one in their possession are encouraged not to accept it and to contact police to make a report.
