Disgraced Hamilton police officer Robert Hansen announced today that he will be tendering his resignation from the force after he was found guilty of perjury and obstruction of justice last month. The 16 year veteran officer and detective with the gangs and weapons inforcement unit announced today that he will be tendering his resignation effective August 5th.
The 41 year old was found guilty of perjury and obstruction of justice last month and sentenced for five years in jail after text messages revealed that Hansen asked an informant to plant a gun at a drug dealer’s home in order to get a search warrant. Hansen is currently on bail awaiting an appeal hearing at a later date.
Hansen had been suspended with pay for the past four years, earning up to six figures almost each year except one. Once the guilty verdict was read Police Chief Eric Girt proptly cut Hansen off financially.
Hansen still has charges pending under the police services act and there will be a hearing at the Central Station on August 23rd. We have been told that during that hearing that the charges will be dropped due to the fact that the tribunal no longer has jurisdiction over Hansen seeing that he would already have tendered his resignation and is no longer with the force.
