The City of Hamilton and Crosswalk Communities have partnered to build 60 new affordable housing units on Lake Avenue South in Stoney Creek.

The project will establish new housing units at 5 Lake Ave. South, and 13 Lake Ave. South, which are currently being used as local parking lots.

The city says 20 per cent of this housing will be prioritized for veterans, bringing Hamilton one step closer to providing much-needed homes for residents and veterans.

Once complete, the new affordable housing will provide stable homes for residents and veterans while fostering a more inclusive and resilient neighborhood

City council had previously voted on the development, bringing two heated debates to a tie-vote both times.

Last March during a third vote on the motion, Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath used her mayor powers in favour for it to pass.

“My commitment to finding solutions to the housing crisis remains unwavering,” said Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath. “Every Hamiltonian deserves a safe, affordable place to call home. This is about making smart use of public land to deliver lasting benefits for our community and ensuring more residents can build their future here in Hamilton.”

As the project moves forward, Crosswalk Communities will continue working with the city and community stakeholders to implement parking arrangements that support the needs of residents, local businesses and the broader Stoney Creek community.

“While today’s announcement is an important milestone, it is one step in a much larger effort to increase Hamilton’s supply of affordable housing and create dynamic neighbourhoods through the Housing Sustainability and Investment Roadmap,” said Hamilton’s City Manager Marnie Cluckie. “Real progress comes from continuing to make strategic investments, building strong partnerships and finding innovative ways to build to bring more housing online faster.”

As part of the city’s Housing Sustainability and Investment Roadmap, the next three years will see the development of around 30 housing projects, to create around 1,455 affordable, 511 supportive and 138 attainable housing units.

Crosswalk Communities will use modern modular construction to build the homes more efficiently, helping reduce construction time in the neighbourhood while minimizing environmental impacts.

As the project moves forward, Crosswalk Communities will continue working with the city and community stakeholders to implement parking arrangements that support the needs of residents, local businesses and the broader Stoney Creek community.

The city will lease the land to Crosswalk Communities at a nominal rate and prove $500,000 through the Housing Secretariat’s Affordable Housing Development Project Stream to support development costs.
