The Supreme Court of Canada has dismissed an appeal from doctors in the case of Hassan Rasouli.
Rasouli as been in a minimally conscious state for the past two years, and although doctors say he will not recover, his wife refused to take him off life support.
The Supreme Court has ruled in favour of the family, saying doctors cannot take him off life support without their consent.
The 61-year-old Iranian immigrant suffered brain damage during a surgery in 2010.
Doctors argued unsuccessfully that it is in Rasouli’s best interest to be taken off his ventilator, and that they can’t be forced to provide care that is futile.
