Starting today, residents in Niagara Falls can adopt one of the city’s 3,080 fire hydrants following the release of “Adopt-A-Hydrant” program.
The program is intended to encourage residents to keep hydrants clear during winter months, making it easier for fire crews to quickly find and use in emergency situations.
In a release, the city says major winter storms often hide fire hydrants under the snow – forcing crews to locate and shovel out hydrants before hooking up their hoses, losing time that could have been spent containing a fire and saving lives.

Residents interested in adopting a hydrant can visit https://niagarafalls.ca/city-hall/municipal-works/adopt-a-hydrant-program.aspx.
The city asks residents to clear a meter of snow around the hydrant, as well as a meter wide path from the hydrant to the curb.
During summer months, members are asked to keep trees and hedges cut back and the hydrant free of debris, weeds and grass.
