Federal government invests $210K to protect Hamilton from climate risks

The Government of Canada is helping protect Hamilton from climate risks through an investment of $210,000 to update and accelerate climate adaptation efforts.

This funding will also go towards studying a nature-based sponge plaza pilot for local climate resilience.

These are just two of 141 climate resilience projects across 128 communities receiving funding from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Green Municipal Fund.

The government says preparing for climate threats including floods and wildfires is the best way for Canadian communities to protect residents and control rising costs.

This initiative supports adaptation plans, climate-focused asset management, risk assessments, financing studies and projects that reduce risks to communities, homes and businesses.

Every $1 spent on climate resilience measures in Canada can save up to $15 in the long-run, according to an estimate by the Canadian Climate Institute.

“Through this investment, our government is helping Hamilton protect residents from extreme heat while supporting practical, local solutions that make our communities safer, healthier and better prepared for the impacts of climate changes,” says MP Lisa Hepfner.
