A man from our region began a mission this weekend to change the lives of the many people and families who have to face a diagnosis of cancer. Mike Duhacek wants to bury cancer and wants people facing the disease to know someone is fighting for them.

When Mike Duhacek pulled out of Owen Sound this weekend at the start of this epic journey, the temperature was minus 18 and the wind chill minus 28. One of the coldest days of the year. But he did it, telling himself it was supposed to be hard.

Mike is walking more than 200 km from Owen Sound to Oakville, and Halton Police headquarters, where he works, pulling a snowmobile sled carrying the message “Cancer.”

His grandparents died of cancer, and his mother was treated for cancer. He says it’s the kind of thing that affects a whole family.

So he had this sign made up. He’s going to bury it at the end of this journey on Friday as a symbol of the fight against cancer.

Mike is hoping to raise $30,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society in the name of Cops for Cancer.
