Hamilton girl gets her own TV show to promote diversity in books

Last year, CHCH News spoke with a 12-year-old Hamilton girl who ran an Instagram page dedicated to teaching others about the importance of diversity in books. Now, she has her own TV show.
In 2020, Ainara Alleyne started an Instagram page “Ainara’s Bookshelf” dedicated to highlighting books starring characters of colour and those with diverse cultures and physical abilities. In just 3 years it amassed nearly 9,000 followers.
Fast forward to now and that Instagram page turned into her own show. “Ainara’s Bookshelf” can be found on the marbleKids YouTube channel and airs Thursday at 6 on TVOKids.
In most of the 11-minute episodes, Alleyne reviews the week’s readings from her book loft and interviews an author.
Alleyne’s resume has only grown recently having been invited to help kick off Black History Month in Hamilton last week. She plans on continuing to grow that resume by writing a book of her own.
