Halton District School Board hosted its first wheelchair basketball tournament

First Published:

High school students in Burlington hit the basketball court today for Halton District School Board’s first wheelchair basketball tournament.

The event hopes to give able-bodied students an understanding of what it takes for other athletes to succeed.

Chris Chandler coaches the Burlington Vipers wheelchair basketball team. He says the tournament was an initiative between their team, the school board, Ontario Para Network, and Wheelchair Basketball Canada as a way to mark National AccessAbility Week.

Students had the chance to use the wheelchairs in their classes for two weeks prior to the tournament to allow them to gain an appreciation for the game and connect with the community.

Both Vipers Basketball and the school say this tournament is just the beginning and hope it will open the doors for other Para events in the future.
