From Splash (1984) to The Little Mermaid (1989), we’ve been intrigued by a mythical creature that makes life underwater seem like a magical paradise. Toronto based documentarian Ali Weinstein explores the lives of five real life mermaids in the aptly titled film, Mermaids. Okay, they aren’t actually mermaids, but they sure do look like them and go to incredible lengths to show their true selves to the world. Brigitte Truong had a chance to sit down with Ali and one of her subjects Cookie, and speak to them about the film and the importance of “mermaiding” in the lives of those that are drawn to it.

Mermaids had its World Premiere at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival on Friday April 28th, don’t miss the fifth and final screening of the enchanting doc on May 5th at 12PM. For ticket info visit hotdocs.ca.
