It was a special day at Burlington City Hall today as Lyndsie Cox was honoured for her quick thinking that saved a life.

It happened at Mainway Arena on May 7 when Dan Dufford suffered a heart attack. Cox didn’t hesitate to rush into action.

“I asked if they needed a defibrillator. They said yes, so I grabbed it off the wall and ran onto the ice escorted by some of his team members. At that point, his other team members had removed his chest pad and his jersey and had already commenced CPR. So I cut open the shirt, placed the defib pads on, and it was a shockable rhythm so we shocked. We continued CPR and shocking until EMS arrived,” said Cox.

Cox continued that police and emergency services eventually took over and were able to set up an IV. Cox and the others were eventually able to get a pulse back.

“For the most part, I think instinct took over. The fear came afterwards. I just hoped that he made it okay,” said Cox.

She notes that Dan was waving and thanking people as he left on a stretcher.

Dan was at the ceremony today along with members of his hockey team.

Cox said she only relaxed weeks later when she found out from Dan’s hockey team that he was going to be okay. Cox was presented with a certificate from Burlington mayor Marianne Meed Ward.
