White House continues push for Greenland control as global tensions rise

Tensions are rising on the world stage over Greenland, the vast Arctic island and semi-autonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark.

The White House’s push to gain control of the island reached a new level over the weekend when President Donald Trump tied his ambitions to annex Greenland to his unsuccessful bid for a Nobel Peace Prize.

In an unusual message to Norway’s Prime Minister, Trump says he no longer feels bound “to think purely of peace.”

Prime Minister Mark Carney says he’s concerned and Canada is committed to working with NATO partners to increase Arctic defence.

In addition to the letter sent to Norway’s Prime Minister, President Trump has also threatened to impose new tariffs on several European countries, unless a deal is reached for the purchase of Greenland.

In a social media post Trump wrote “only the United States of America, under President Donald J Trump, can play in this game.”

Beyond protesters and politicians, the Catholic Church is now seemingly getting involved.

The three highest-ranking Roman Catholic Clerics released a letter Monday calling for a moral foreign policy, where military action must be seen as a last resort in extreme situations.
