A 28-point peace plan has been put forward in a bid to end the war in Ukraine.
The proposal was drafted by the United States with input from the Kremlin.
The plan would see Ukraine concede significant territory, granting Russia full control over Crimea and the Donbas region.
Ukraine would also be required to withdraw its troops from Donbas entirely, turning the area into a demilitarized zone.
Additional reporting from Axios suggests the proposal includes long-term limits on the size of Ukraine’s military and restrictions on its access to long-range missiles.
Frank Sysyn, a historian with the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, says the reported terms mirror long-standing Russian demands, raising concerns about the broader consequences for the region.
He warns that the impact could stretch well beyond Ukraine, potentially influencing future tensions involving Belarus, Moldova, the Caucasus and even parts of Kazakhstan.
