WestJet flight attendants vote to authorize strike as early as Aug. 2

Thousands of WestJet flight attendants could walk off the job in less than three weeks after voting Wednesday to authorize a strike.

The strike mandate gives union officials the authority to call a strike after a 21-day cooling-off period.

Despite months at the bargaining table, CUPE says it is still fighting for better pay and working conditions.

“A strike authorization vote is a common step by unions in context of the overall labour negotiation process and does not mean a strike will occur,” WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech says.

“We are steadfast in our commitment to reach a meaningful agreement with CUPE that recognizes the contribution and professionalism of our cabin crew members and keeps WestJet competitive and sustainable.”

The union says the earliest date a legal strike or employer lockout could happen is Aug. 2.
