Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after an officer-involved shooting in Turkey Point left a 22-year-old man dead.
The shooting happened Tuesday afternoon shortly after 1 p.m. at MacDonald Turkey Point Marina.
A representative from the marina posted on social media that a man “came speeding in the channel, came to shore and then fled on foot up the road.”
“We’re a busy marina — we have stuff happen, but never something like this,” said Brad Thompson, the general manager at MacDonald Turkey Point Marina.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) confirmed in a statement that the provincial police marine unit attempted to stop a jet ski that had “got their attention.”
Instead of stopping, The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says the man headed for the marina.
“Yeah, this was different,” said Thompson. “He came in, probably 60 – 70 miles an hour [around 100 km/h] past our gas and fuel dock.”
“All the way down the channel to the dead-end, so he couldn’t get any further, so he just pulled into the boat houses there and ran on foot,” said Thompson.
Officials said the man ran into some nearby bushes.
“Officers from the OPP Emergency Response Team and K9 team located the individual,” said Const. Ed Sanchuck with the OPP. “During an interaction, police discharged their firearm — the individual was pronounced deceased.”
The SIU, the provincial agency responsible for probing any incident involving death, injury, or firearm discharge relating to a police officer, says the man was hit by both an anti-riot weapon and a firearm.
The SIU has invoked their mandate and is now in charge of the case. They are asking anyone who may have more information about this incident to contact their office.
