A City of Hamilton crossing guard was hit and killed by a dump truck on Hamilton Mountain while heading to his work on Thursday afternoon.

The tragic event happened at the intersection of Mohawk Road and Upper Wentworth Street and closed the area into the evening while police investigated.

Hamilton police say the 52-year-old man was struck as he was walking across the busy intersection around 2:30 p.m. The dump truck was travelling eastbound on Mohawk Road before the driver attempted to turn onto Upper Wentworth Street.

The incident was witnessed by many people, including a police officer.

“I don’t think he realized how far he pulled the individual, but he did end up stopping a good 45 to 50 feet down the road,” said Justin Lake, who saw the collision. “We’re all shaken up a lot — it’s unfortunate what happened, God bless his soul.”

Investigators say it’s still quite early to piece together what exactly happened, however they did confirm that speed was not a factor.

“The driver was cooperative — he’ll be providing a statement to police,” said Const. Adam Kimber with Hamilton Police. “When that happens, then we’ll have a clear picture as to what happened here.”

The Ministry of Labour was notified and is conducting a separate investigation.

Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath said that she was “heartbroken to learn of the tragic incident” and posted on X:
