A man has died following an early morning basement fire in St. Catharines on Thursday.
Fire crews responded shortly before 9 a.m. to a report of a blaze at 83 Jacobson Ave.
St. Catharines Fire Chief Dave Upper says crews were met with a fire in the basement.
“They rescued a male and female from the main floor who suffered minor injuries,” he says, “and then they proceeded to the basement and rescued a male.”
Upper says firefighters worked tirelessly to try and save the middle-aged man’s life, but he eventually died in hospital.
“Our thoughts go out to the family of the deceased,” said Upper. “Our efforts from the first responders gave the victim the very best chance for survival. All the agencies did an incredible job and we’re very thankful for the work that they did today.”
Upper says rooms in the house were being rented out to five tenants.
Investigators from the St. Catharines fire department and the Office of the Fire Marshal are looking into the cause of the blaze.
