Pedestrian, 85, seriously injured after being struck by off-duty Niagara cop

An 85-year-old pedestrian is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after being struck Tuesday by a vehicle driven by an off-duty Niagara police officer in St. Catharines.

It happened around 9:45 a.m. in the parking lot of a plaza near the intersection of Welland Avenue and Bunting Road.

Niagara police found the pedestrian — a St. Catharines man — with life-threatening injuries and he was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The driver was determined to be an off-duty Niagara police officer. They remained at the scene.

Since the collision involved an off-duty Niagara police officer, the NRPS asked Hamilton police to take over the investigation to avoid any conflict of interest.

The parking lot is closed while Hamilton police investigate.
