Police are holding the scene of an overnight multiple-alarm house fire on Hamilton Mountain that has been deemed suspicious.
It happened at a home owned by Rocco Luppino, a known member of an organized crime family.
Hamilton Fire Department crews responded to the blaze at 52 Mountain Brow Blvd., shortly after 1:30 a.m. and found a “well-involved” fire in the kitchen area of the one-and-a-half storey home.
In 2019, Luppino’s son Cece was shot and killed at the home next door, which he also owned.
The fire department says crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames, and located a well-involved fire in the kitchen area.
They say the blaze extended through the walls and ceiling to the second floor, and to the attic, eventually breaking through the roof.
Fortunately, there are no reports of any injuries. Neighbours told CHCH News that the house sat vacant for some time now, but that the owner dropped by from time to time to check on the property.
Hamilton Fire says it took firefighters approximately 45 minutes to bring it under control, but not before the structure sustained damages estimated to be in the $1.5 million range.
The house was vacant and there are no reports of injuries. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
Hamilton’s fire chief says that the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has been contacted to investigate.
